Officiating a game is a special job because not everyone can do it. It can also be critical because how the game goes on is partly dependent upon the attending official in the court. But one more thing is that it pays you off adequately. If you believe you can do the work of a game official, why not begin looking for a game officiating job? Please read on to the next few paragraphs to know what it takes to be good at game officiating and figure out if now is the time to start applying for the job.
What Are the Characteristics of a Good Game Official?
1. Has Knowledge of the Rules and Tenets of the Game
All games are technical by nature. You cannot be game official unless you have a reliable knowledge of the rules and tenets of the game (derived from study and training) and has a good number of experiences either playing the game or officiating the game. This means to say that you need to be as knowledgeable or as good the players themselves. If there is a game that you are greatly familiar with and which you have had a length of experience with, do not hesitate to work as a game official.
2. Strict in Implementing Game Rules
Attitudes play in being a game official. Mere knowledge of the rules and awareness of the course of the play will not make it through. You have to have the commitment to implement the rules and stick to the tenets of the game. If not, the execution of your being an official will be a disaster both to you and to the game itself. If you think you are strong enough to abide with the rules of the game and have the commitment to ensure everyone else does, then believe it or not, you can be good at officiating a game.
3. Keeps the Self Under Control
Many games turn out into a talk of the town (in a negative sense) because people claim the officials are siding onto one team. That’s a bad thing for game officials. Fairness must be kept alive from the start of the play until the very end. Officials are not players, so only the execution of the job of an official must be performed and nothing else. Going emotional and favoring a team is a clear violation. Apply for a game officiating job if you think you can keep yourself under control and make it to a fair game officiating.
Many game officials are given a thumbs up for a job well done. Others are given a rail because of a work not properly executed. The work of a game official is very challenging. But if you have the three characteristics mentioned above, no need to hide yourself. There are plenty of professional game events that are looking for professional game officials. Do it because you are good at it!
